COPIOUS VOMITING IN DOGS MAY INDICATE A BOWEL OBSTRUCTION REQUIRING EMERGENCY SURGERY. DO NOT DELAY!

COPIOUS VOMITING IN DOGS MAY INDICATE A BOWEL OBSTRUCTION REQUIRING EMERGENCY SURGERY. DO NOT DELAY!

July 14, 2022

Several months after moving to Budapest, our dachshund, Franky, suddenly developed an acute onset of profuse vomiting overnight, and we rushed her to the veterinary surgery the following morning.

After a perfunctory examination, the Vet diagnosed a non-specific canine virus, which causes vomiting and a runny tummy.  Even though I pointed out that the vomiting was copious and there was no diarrhoea, the Vet did not order any additional tests.  No blood work, ultrasound or radiograph…

CANINE HEMANGIOSARCOMA

CANINE HEMANGIOSARCOMA

July 12, 2022

It was months after Lulu died that I came across the word;- Hemangiosarcoma (HSA). A highly malignant incurable cluster of cells that line the internal surface of blood vessels and  most commonly affects the spleen, less often the liver and the heart. This form of hemangiosarcoma is potentially fatal because these tumours grow internally and develop very slowly with no warning signs or symptoms until the advanced stages, leaving little time to make decisions or research treatment options. …

DOGS LOVE US

DOGS LOVE US

Experts using MRI  scans studying the brains of dogs have mapped the canine reward responses, which shows how  they respond to humans and other animals. When technicians introduced dogs to various smells, they could readily discern the difference between canines and humans. The scent of familiar humans in particular, evoked reward responses in the brain similar to when we see a friend we like.  No other smell kindled this kind of reaction, not even that of close doggy friends.&nb…

Cataract surgery and IOLs for dogs.

Cataract surgery and IOLs for dogs.

July 05, 2022

During the height of the Covid pandemic, we, like most people globally, were instructed to wait outside our Veterinary clinic for an assistant to collect our dog and take it in to be seen by the Vet.  While we waited, owners readily chatted do each other about their dog’s various ailments.  One particular discussion piqued my interest between two dog owners, which was about surgery for intraocular lenses that both their dogs had received.

Naturally, I realised that dogs also …

Heat Stroke in Dogs

Heat Stroke in Dogs

June 24, 2022

With the summer heat waves upon us in the northern hemisphere, we should revisit the subject of heat stroke in dogs, as many dog owners do not realise how dangerous this avoidable condition can be, or how quickly it can develop.

Here is an excerpt from my book From Wolf to Supermutt and Everything in Between, to remind us all to be extra careful, and not to  leave our dogs in parked cars, or hot unshaded back yards, or go jogging with them in the middle of the day when temperatures…

Benefits of hemp and CBD oil in Canines

Benefits of hemp and CBD oil in Canines

June 22, 2022

When we renovated our house in the cul-de-sac and started clearing the jungle that posed as a garden, we came across a massive flowering cannabis plant.  Naturally, I was concerned about having illegal substances growing in our garden, and we promptly removed the plant,  though friends reassured me that, in all likelihood, it was not marijuana, just a hemp plant.  One of the fastest-growing plants, hemp spreads quickly as birds and other mammals ingest and disperse the …

My best beloved canine friends, past and present.

My best beloved canine friends, past and present.

June 22, 2022

One reader shared her disappointment that I had not included any photos of my most beloved pets in my book From Wolf to Supermutt and Everything in between.

Alas, a few years ago I had a major and irredemable malfunction on my hard drive where I kept my digital photos,  most of wich were lost forever. I have scoured my photo albums but  due to the passage time, photos have deteriorated beyond where they are showable. In an effort to accomodate some of my readers, I'v…

Why dogs should be leashed.

Why dogs should be leashed.

June 20, 2022

There are volumes of books, articles, blogs on training reactive dogs, and all work well in a perfect world. Additionally, they often advise keeping a reactive dog calm by choosing the right environment and avoiding areas with off-leash dogs. My repertoire also incorporated behaviour adjustment training, offering a more natural spin on counterconditioning. Primarily, the foundations are the same. We set our dog up on a long leash, a reasonable distance from the helper and the trigger dog, …
